This is how we began our journey as Australian house sitters. This was our very first house sit and I guess I can say if we could manage this one we could manage anything. We cared for the home, pets and farm animals for the last 2 weeks of the home owners holiday to France. We were also in the last two weeks of packing up our house so it was a very busy time as you can imagine. Not made any easier by the fact the local council had closed off the road from their house to ours for the duration of the sit which meant we spent 5 times longer going from one house to the other.
We moved into their home on the first day of the sit and it was a good thing ours was still nearby. I really had to reassess some of the items I had chosen to take and some I had decided to leave behind as we began our journey to become a house sitter. Given we were on a working farm I had to add in more 'farm clothes and shoes'. This has proved useful for future house sits though as many of the dogs have us trekking through wet parklands and rough tracks even though it's in the city suburbs.
200 + sheep 2 herds of cows 5 chooks (hens) 17 ducks 40 + canaries 2 geese 2 horses 1 emu 1 cat 6 Australian kelpies
I must say we did need some help when a young calf got out of the paddock and took up residence in the driveway. As house sitters you have to be prepared for anything. When the very old blind sheep collapsed during the night we had to phone a neighbour to come and 'put it to sleep'.
The house sitters book provided by the home owner was absolutely essential as it gave all the feeding instructions and importantly who to phone for various situations. As Australian house sitters it is important to make sure you have all the details necessary regarding, water tanks, pumps, power supplies etc.
It was a remarkable adventure, a hive of activity with pets and animals all over the place. We learned so much and had a wonderful time, although it was very busy we would certainly love to return. House sitting Australia style is certainly interesting and exotic. Who knows, maybe one day we can head off on the pet sitter international adventures!
